The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways (InTASC, 2013).
Brief Description of Evidence
Within the fall semester of 2019, as a part of my EDUC 240 - Introduction to Physical and Health Education for Elementary Teachers class, our team had to grasp an understanding of instructional strategies. We had to use a multitude of avenues to teach our students how to manage their feelings.
During this class we had the opportunity to create a grant proposal that showed the need for a multi-faceted facility that would Mold Another Generation In Community (M.A.G.I.C.). We also had to create a lesson plan that would help guide the student in grasping and applying those skills learned. My focus today is our lesson plan on how we taught younger students to manage and express their feelings in a positive way. . How This Artifact Demonstrates My Competence on the InTASC Standard |
Analysis of What I LearnedThrough this experience, I learned how to create and implement a lesson plan that allowed us a multitude of ways for my students to be able to express their feelings in a healthy manner. Our team worked hard at creating M.A.G.I.C., a place that exists to enrich the lives of students through programs that help build a strong body, mind and spirit through the instruction of whole body healthy living. I learned that students need a multitude of outlets to show their feelings.
I chose the book "I'm Gonna Like Me" to read to the students and show them there are healthy ways to express how they feel. I had the privilege of teaching about feeling monsters and how they could be used to express their feelings. I then had them create their own feeling monsters. It was a way for them to express themselves in a non-judgmental environment. The assignment was to create a monster that showed me how they felt at that moment. After they created their monsters they had to tell me about them. What they were feeling and what each component added meant to them. This allowed them another avenue to express themselves through speaking about it. This is an excellent example of a lesson that would be taught at M.A.G.I.C. |
I am competent in Standards 8 because I was able to understand, create and use strategies that implemented a multitude of techniques. This allowed me to successfully teach students how to recognize, handle and express their emotions in a positive manner. By having different layers of learning (reading a book, explaining the concept and having them create feeling monsters), this helped the students have a deeper understanding on the difference of healthy and harmful expressions of feelings. I am confident that they will make better choices when they are upset in the future.
Abraham Maslow suggested that before individuals meet their full potential, they need to satisfy a series of needs. Children are no different. It is my job as an educator to help my students feel like their needs are being met to the best of my ability. Maslow’s theory shows that those needs need to be met in the following order; Physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem and self-actualization.
Maslow felt that children need love in order to grow psychologically. It is crucial for students to love others and to feel loved by others. His argument was that the absence of love will result in things like loneliness, anxiety and depression. I believe I was able to help students find a way to satisfy their needs for love and belonging. Therefore, they were able to accept and use what I was teaching on how to express their emotions in a healthy manner.
I was able to create an avenue for a positive outcome the students could use in the future. When the students read “I’m Gonna Like Me” and were able to create their own feeling monsters, it allowed them the opportunity to connect what they were feeling with the monster they created. It was a positive way to express themselves with their newly learned skill in a meaningful way.
